About Assam & Kaziranga
Kaziranga is not a park you hope to see something in. The rhino density is such that a morning drive through the Central range usually produces several, along with wild buffalo, swamp deer and a great many elephants.
The park runs in ranges, and they are genuinely different: Central for the classic grassland and rhino, Western for water birds and more rhino, Eastern for the wetlands and the best birding. An elephant-back ride at first light is the traditional way in and is limited and booked well ahead.
Add Guwahati for the Kamakhya temple and a Brahmaputra sunset cruise, and Majuli, the largest river island in the world, if you have the days.

Know before you go
Kaziranga closes to visitors in the monsoon, roughly mid-May to late October, because the Brahmaputra floods it. Opening dates are announced by the forest department each year.
Elephant safari slots are few and are allocated in advance. If it matters to you, say so at enquiry, not later.
Safari permits are issued in your name against photo ID.
